Polar Tank APX0 Trailer Recall 15V021: Brake Actuator May Cause Drag and Fire Risk

NHTSA campaign 15V021, reported January 20, 2015, 10 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2015 trailers equipped with specific Haldex Life Seal Type 30/30 long stroke air brake actuators may have an incomplete attachment of the internal rubber diaphragm to the parking brake section's actuation mechanism. This can allow air to leak internally past the diaphragm and become trapped in the parking brake section. If the air is not vented, the actuator may not fully release, causing brake drag and overheated wheel-end service brakes, which increases the risk of a fire.

The recall covers certain 2015 SRJH, APX0, and ATB6 Polar Tank trailers built between August 27, 2014 and November 29, 2014, with actuators manufactured between January 9, 2014 and October 28, 2014. Polar Tank Trailer, LLC will notify owners, and authorized dealers will inspect and replace the affected actuators as necessary at no cost to you. Owners can contact Polar customer service at 1-320-746-2255 (recall number 14E075). You can also check your vehicle identification number for any open recalls.

Official recall notice

Component
PARKING BRAKE:DRIVELINE:HYDRAULIC:ACTUATOR
Problem
Polar Tank Trailer, LLC (Polar) is recalling certain model year 2015 SRJH, APX0, and ATB6 trailers manufactured August 27, 2014, to November 29, 2014, equipped with certain Haldex Life Seal Type 30/30 Long Stroke Air Brake Actuators manufactured January 9, 2014, to October 28, 2014. The affected actuators may have an incomplete attachment of the internal rubber diaphragm to the actuation mechanism of the parking brake section of the Life Seal actuator.
Risk
If the diaphragm is not completely attached, there may be internal leakage from the service section past the diaphragm, potentially trapping air pressure in the parking brake section. This air pressure in turn, if not vented, may prevent full release of the actuator unit, and may induce brake drag and may result in overheated wheelend service brakes, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Polar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the actuators, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2015. Owners may contact Polar customer service at 1-320-746-2255. Polar's number for this recall is 14E075.
